Starting small in 2009, our dedication to our work saw us gaining bigger projects. Our first breakthrough came when our founder Wong Swee Chun built his first Housing and Development Board (HDB) project at Serangoon Avenue 4 in 1982. With sights set high but feet firmly planted on the ground, the passionate builder soon steered the company on an inspiring journey as a trusted partner of the JRM ENGINEERING PTE. LTD. For more than five decades, we played a major role in transforming Singapore’s urban landscape.

From Strength to Strength

The history of Straits Construction began with the vision and fervour of a young man. As a teenager, Wong Swee Chun joined the construction industry as an apprentice to fulfil his passion for building homes. Amassing his experience and motivated by the rapid development of Singapore, he started Straits Construction in 2009.

JRM Engineering Pte Ltd secured its first public housing construction project at Serangoon Avenue 4 in 1982. Since then JRM Engineering Pte Ltd has grown from strength to strength. The following milestones chart our growth trajectory:

Avenue South Residence

Avenue South Residence


Avenue South Residence is a residential development comprising of two 56 storey towers and 5 blocks of 4 storey heritage restoration and modernization work, with a total of 1,074 residential units. Upon completion, this project will be the world’s tallest modular building, with a total of 3,034 PPVC modules being installed.

The project includes 16 3 storey high pocket gardens in the two towers, as well as converting the 36th floor into a sky garden, which requires additional planning and adjustment to the PPVC process. Other works include road widening and connection to the Rail Corridor.

Proposed refurbishment works at SETSCO, comprising Carpark, Ancillary Offices and Workers’ Dormitory to deliver a newly upgraded facility that create a conducive environment for an established testing centre.

Modernized High-Volume Production Facilities, High-Level Cleanroom Classification and Elaborate Food Testing Laboratories fitted with the latest building mechanical and electrical systems to meet the utmost stringent testing requirements.

Rejuvenated ancillary office spaces with ergonomically furnished interiors to support the newly upgraded testing centre.

A refreshing façade to complement a newly upgraded facility.

Reconfigured washrooms and changing room layout fitted with water-efficient sanitary ware and energy saving lightings to create a sustainable environment.

SETSCO AEI works were carried out in a fully functioning testing centre setting. Stringent safety, dust and noise control measures were implemented to mitigate complaints during the course of work.

Proposed refurbishment and enhancement work at Great World Retail Mall, comprising Open-Concept Design Retails, Carparks and Atrium to deliver a brand new revitalised, refreshed destination for leisure, entertainment and lifestyle.

Prominent Atrium with defined Self-Contained Pods with connecting link bridges and a refreshing façade to welcome a brand new look and redefining the shopping experience.

Great World Retail Mall AEI works were carried out in several phases in a live building setting with surrounding live offices and residential buildings. Stringent safety, dust and noise control measures are implemented to mitigate complaints during the course of work.

Proposed refurbishment works at Suntec City Office Towers 1 to 5, comprising Main Entrance Lobbies, Lift lobbies and Washrooms to deliver a brand new look to common areas and redefining the workplace experience.

Rejuvenating the main lobby with premium finishes, design and upgraded security access system for seamless building access to enhance the arrival experience.

Modernized office lift lobbies complemented with contemporary ambient lighting, refurbished corridors and splendidly furnished lift interiors.

Reconfigured washrooms layout fitted with brand new sanitary ware and fittings with attractive finishes to polish up the sense of comfort and efficiency.

Suntec City Office Towers AEI works were carried out in several sub-phases of the main phase in a live office setting. Stringent safety, dust and noise control measures are implemented to mitigate complaints during the course of work.
